5 people
i am inspired to write about people that i would like to meet. this being said, there are a lot of people that i would like to meet, however i will not elaborate on them all. let's just call them the 5. of the 5, there are 5 people in this world, alive today that i would like to meet. they have all had an influence on me in some way, shape, or form.
karch kiraly is the first. he is an inspiration to me. he has won 3 gold medals in volleyball, 2 indoor, and one on the beach. but more than that, he is volleyball. he has won more tournies than anyone, and his legend will never end. i remember seeing him in the olympics and not knowing who he was. pictures that i would later see of him jumping to hit a ball were amazing. 3 ncaa championships, 3 gold medals, playing for 4 decades, he is the ironman. his pink hat has always been on the beach to me. my passion for the game is a direct result of watching him during the '95-97 years. like ron von hagan, sinjin smith, and randy stoklos, beach volleyball at least would not be what it is without them. know the history and you appreciate the knowledge that much more.
fakir musafar was first seen by me while in high school. i watched a movie, 'a man called horse'. there is a suspension during the movie where a man is suspended by the muscles in his chest. he is pierced through the muscles and suspended during the sundance ritual and lasts about 20 minutes, during which time an out of body experience is the norm. while i myself have never experienced this, nor do i plan to, fakir is the blame for getting me interested in body modification. while i will not post a link, i really an only interested mostly in tattoos and certain body piercings. currently i have 8 piercings and 3 tattoos. this has been the limit for now until my bankroll increases. till then, i will be happy with what i have. but for those not happy with me doing it in the first place, blame fakir.
#3 is warren miller. i watched him also in high school and formed an obsession. warren is a filmmaker. no, not porn, ski and snowboard movies. his comical approach to skiing made me have to go. as a sophmore or junior in high school, i went with my youth group. that was the first of about 8 annual trips, give or take one or 2. plus, since leaving that group, it has been a family and crew trip whenever we get the chance. i have seen lots. i lived at keystone out of high school and skiied everyday and night. i have driven all day and stayed in the shitiest motels, and i have stayed at some pretty nice condos in beds i could trust. however, seeing warren's movies always made me want some deep powder base, big jumps, and no oxygen.
matt hoffman would be another. to me, he was the man before dave mirra. dave changed the way people ride today, however like tony hawk, matt was a revolution to the sport. if i remember right, he entered a competition as an amateur at 16, won by such a large margin, that he entered the same comp as a pro and won it as well. he was a change from what had existed prior. new tricks, bigger air, and the desire to improve led him to become one of the best in the world. the downside to all of this is the injuries. his list is long and varied. from his site, 'Despite numerous injuries and 19 operations, Hoffman continues to ever-challenge life.' he was the first to pull more than 100 tricks, including the 900. the condor, shall forever fly.
bill watterson is the last of my 5. he is the artist behind calvin and hobbes. they were the first tattoo that i ever received. and they are playing volleyball. there is actually a comic he did of calvin and hobbes playing volleyball. that inspired the tattoo with a little artistic change. his comic talent has more of a profound meaning than many know. the names of the characters have meanings. calvin after john calvin, and hobbes after thomas hobbes. you will have to read to find out why he chose these, but it is interesting. another few facts about the strip, calvin has no last name, and mom and dad are only referred to as such and nicknames. their position in the strip is only as mom and dad and need not to be any more so. overall, my favorite comic strip of all time. a shame he quit drawing it. however i have my books and will read them passionately.
again, these are just a mere 5 people, there are many more. maybe i will do the 5 people not alive i would have like to meet next post. hmmmm??
